Enrolment

Learners can enroll at any time to commence their studies.

Enrolment is for a period of 12 months from the date of enrolment.
Upon payment of fees our learning documentation will be issued for your course preparation and classroom attendance. 

Whitsunday Maritime Training Centre(WMTC) meets ASQA Standards for individual students by not collecting pre-paid enrolment fees which are above the threshold pre-paid amount of $1,500.

Once we receive your enrolment form we will generate an invoice for your payment. Payment can be made by Mastercard, Visa or direct deposit.

Qualification Description

This qualification is suitable for people working in an entry level position in the maritime industry as a General-Purpose Hand under general supervision of the master or engineer of a commercial vessel to:

  • assist as a general hand on deck or in the engine room of a commercial vessel length as described in Marine Order505 within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ)
  • assist as a general hand in theengine room only for a vessel with propulsion power as described in Marine Order 505.

 Licensing/Regulatory Information

This level of qualification is currently cited as meeting some of the requirements for certification as a General Purpose Hand Near Coastal as defined by Marine Order 505 (Certificates of competency - National law) 2022.

Certification will require achievement of the MAR10220 Certificate I in Maritime Operations (General Purpose Hand Near Coastal), 5 days qualifying sea service on a commercial vessel and an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) approved first aid certificate. People seeking certification should check with AMSA.

AMSA certification will require: achieving

  • 5 days qualifying sea service
  • meeting the medical and eyesight requirements

Entry Requirements

There are no entry requirements for this qualification.
Applicants must be 16 years old to be issued a licence.

Total number of units = 8 core units

MARB053 - Assist with routine maintenance on a commercial vessel
MARG012 - Work as part of a crew on a commercial vessel
MARN016 - Apply general purpose hand skills aboard a commercial vessel
